The
Bee Gees
(brothers Maurice, Barry and Robin Gibb), are surely one of the most
important and best pop-rock group of all time. They are one of the top
five most successful recording artists of all time (behind Elvis Presley,
the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Paul Mc Cartney). They are in the music
scene since 1965 and have sold more than 110 millions records worldwide,
and as songwriters, they have penned dozens of hits for themselves and other
acts. To have an idea, only John Lennon & Paul McCartney (of
the Beatles) have written more number one singles on the US charts than
Barry Gibb. The Brothers Gibb (including Andy) have amassed more than
240 #1 charts positions (albums & singles) worldwide, themselves and/or
with others acts singing their songs. In the U.S. , they've had seven million
selling singles, five others that sold over two million, nine gold albums,
thirteen platinum albums and three straight number one LPs. They've had
19 no.1 hits themselves and lots more for other artists. In the US charts
they are among the the few recording artists to write and produce six
straight number one singles and are the first composers, since the Beatles,
to have five songs in the top ten at the same time. In the UK,
the Bee Gees have had # 1 hits singles in each of the last four decades.
In Italy, they topped the charts (album and singles) 26 times, and (up to
1982) the Bee Gees are one of the five most successful recording artists
of all time, outdone only by Italian artists such the late Lucio Battisti
(#1), Mina (#2) Claudio Baglioni (tie) Lucio Dalla (#3) (Source: D. Salvatori,"25
anni di Hit Parade in Italia ", Mondadori Editore, Italy, 1982.)
Moreover, according to "Hit Parade Italia" (a project collecting
all the Italian charts data from 1947 up to today), "Stayin'alive"
is the all time best selling foreign language song, being placed at #4 in
the "All
Time Chart", outdone only by Italian songs.
The "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack was the biggest selling album of all
time until the record was broken by Michael Jackson's "Thriller". The Bee
Gees have earned sixteen Grammy nominations and won 7 Grammy Awards.
They are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in both the US and Australia,
Songwriters Hall of Fame. They have earned lifetime Achievement honours
from the American Music Awards, the Brit Awards and the World Music Awards.
Recently they have been named "BMI Icons" by the performing right
organization Broadcast Music, Inc. because of their “unique and indelible
influence on generations of music makers.”
